Dr. Arthur Medeiros – Auwahi: Hope on a Hawaiian Volcano

Dr. Art Medeiros is a passionate champion of native habitats; he believes that when we become familiar with the cultural and biological richness of indigenous plants and animals, we cherish and protect them. A research biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, Dr. Medeiros is the visionary behind the Leeward Haleakal¯a Watershed Restoration Partnership, an organization dedicated to native-habitat restoration.

Recorded at TEDxMaui 2012, held on January 22, 2012 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

Art is an amazing spirit – a true visionary who’s been a personal inspiration and mentor to me … gave me and my bride, with ancestors in the Kingdom of Hawai’i, the spark of planting iliahi (sandalwood) on the slopes of Haleakala!

For those not familiar, lacking roots in the Islands, note his references to native culture and “protocol” that is woven throughout the work of Auwahi. Art is working in the zone where science meets spirituality – and making amazing magic in the process!

This forest restoration work connects our ancestors with future generations – http://www.auwahi.org/ brings much Aloha ‘aina … deep learning for Island Earth – Engage and support!

This effort will also help the Island of Kaaholawe, in that tradewinds will eventually send ua (rain clouds) over to Kaaholawe, thus helping that ecosystem thrive. Right now the Island is barren, and local attempts to bring it back are being stalled by weather and reforestation. (Lots of cultural happens, too on this fantastic Island)

Absolutely fascinating. Thank God for people like Art Medeiros and the volunteers who honor the land by restoring it.

Finally had a chance to watch this. Your passion is an inspiration to all in that there IS “hope” for our watersheds. Mahalo for your work.
